wax management

OK, its not the hottest topic to discuss, but despite any preconceptions you might have, ear wax, or ‘cerumen’ as it is technically known, is a healthy and normal part of an ear. Cerumen actually plays an important role in helping to keep your ear clean. Ear wax can trap any dust, dirt or foreign objects and prevent them from travelling too deep into your ear canal where they could potentially damage the more delicate and sensitive parts of your ear.

DO I NEED TO MANAGE EAR WAX?

Managing the presence of ear wax can be a necessary thing when you are looking after your hearing health and wellbeing. If you use hearing aids or regularly put devices like ear plugs or hearables in your ears, you may find yourself more prone to needing to attend to your ear wax. This is because ear wax is designed to make its way out of the ear naturally, but the continual introduction of a device into the ear canal can push the wax that is trying to come out back in, and sometimes further in where it can become trapped and unable to escape on its own. If you are not regularly putting listening devices into your ears, then you may never have a need to worry about ear wax management, but some people will just naturally accumulate more wax than others.

Excessive build-up of ear wax can lead to a temporary blockage of the ear, causing discomfort and hearing loss.

HOW DO I MANAGE EAR WAX?

The Soundfair Hearing Centre is staffed by qualified Audiologists, who only ever recommend professional ear wax removal by an audiologist, or trained ear wax removal professional.

Professional ear wax removal involves the professional seeing inside your ear as they remove wax. At the Soundfair Hearing Centre, we wear a special head-worn light and microscope to see inside your ear, and manually remove ear wax using a small curette or forceps, and sometimes a tiny vacuum known as micro-suction. These methods of ear wax removal are very gentle, put you in control of the experience, and most importantly, they are safe.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE MY EAR WAX REMOVED?

Ear Wax removal can be done anytime and as often as needed when it is done by a professional like a trained audiologist. Every ear, just like every human, is different, so building a relationship with your audiologist or ear wax removal professional will help to determine what routine might need to be put in place for you, if any.

Sometimes, wax cannot be completely removed on the first attempt, and some softening drops may be needed to ensure the procedure is painless and effective.

At Soundfair Hearing Centre, we can show you the inside of your ears using our Video otoscope, so you can see what the audiologist sees and take control of the health of your ears.
